   TRIP DETAILS + INFORMATION

Join Little Wilderness for a day of farm tours, together we will connect with people who specialize in agriculture. We will get hands-on experience, learn practical life skills, and get a glimpse into these farms' agricultural way of life.  First stop Feathered Acres Farm, (38975 CO ROAD 32, BELGRADE, MN | 31535 463RD AVENUE, BROOTEN, MN) which is in the transitional process of becoming a full regenerative farm. They strive to protect the natural ecosystem around their  farm while giving animals land to roam and graze. Focused on improving soil health, carbon capture, increasing biodiversity, and sustainable practices. This is a millennial-run farm who hopes to teach the public an older way of farming. They want to inspire people to pursue an agricultural career or start their own farm. On this tour there will be fun hands-on activities for all ages, as well as information that will serve adults more than kids.

Here is an example of what you can expect on our first farm tour:

First stop chickens

  • Gather eggs from the coop

  • Feed the chickens

  • Learn all about chickens, geese and ducks!

  • Watch the ducks and geese bath in their pool

Secondly,  Sheep

  • Learn about hair sheep and wool sheep

  • Feed and feel the sheep’s wool/hair

Finally learn all about pasturing hogs

  • I will feed the sows their special food in the pasture while we observe and learn about them

  • Look for baby piglets hiding and maybe I’ll be able to hold one so we can all get a closer look

  • Feed the pigs some special treats

We will depart from our first farm tour around 11:00 am, and drive 15 miles to the next farm.

Second Stop the Redhead Creamery, a working dairy farm and creamery known for their artisan cheese. Before our tour starts at 12:30,  the creamery kitchen will be open, we plan to eat together there. Your meal is not included in this event. Following lunch we will begin our guided tour. Have you ever wondered how cheese is made? We will see first hand from start to finish their process. First we will visit the cows/calves, and the milking parlor where they are milked twice a day. Next we will get to view the cheese plant, meet the milk maidens, and get an overview of the whole process. We will learn the history of this farm's cheese story, followed by watching a video on cheesemaking. Before we wrap up our time on this tour we will get to sample some of their amazing cheese! Please wear appropriate clothing for the weather, footwear for walking on farms, and lastly expect to have dirty kids by departure!
