TRIP DETAILS + INFORMATION

The Lake sturgeon is Minnesota’s largest fish, and can get to over 100lbs and females can live more than 150 years. A real living dinosaur in our Minnesota waters! Sturgeon prefer somewhat clear rivers and lakes, and a firm gravel bottom. We will be heading to the St. Croix River, one of the best sturgeon fisheries in Minnesota.

Your Little Wilderness coordinator and Captain will be meeting you at the Bayport public access (LAKESIDE PARK 95 CENTRAL AVENUE, BAYPORT, MN), where we will have a form for your parent/guardian to sign before leaving. We will have a brief discussion on safety and equipment prior to heading out. While on the water our captain will show us how he catches the bait that is mostly used for sturgeon in these waters, shad. We will head to our first stop and will be targeting Sturgeon, however we may also try to hook into some catfish as well. With any luck everyone will get a chance to battle with these amazing fish…be ready for a fight!

What to bring: Please dress appropriately for the weather, preferably in layers. Keep in mind that it is usually 10 degrees colder on water than it is on land. The captain has adult size PFDs, but if you need a smaller size please bring one with you. Feel free to bring along snacks and drinks in a small cooler.  A Minnesota resident youth angling license is required for youth ages 16-17. NOTE: This trip will be catch and release only, so you do not need to purchase a sturgeon tag.

All fishing equipment and bait is included. There are bathrooms available at some of the public accesses along the river.
